The important characteristics of oriental aesthetic are poetic and imaginative. Its artistic form is abstract, organic, spiritual and inclusive; the core of Chinese aesthetic is the form itself. For Chinese artists to explore new forms under the layers of ancient Chinese history is important and a difficult task.
Brancusi states “when sculpting, a material guides my hands”. Using materials as visual language is also the study of expressiveness and art appeal of the work itself. The white marble is soft and transparent which provides warmth to the graceful and classical bodies of work. The bronze is heavy with rugged touch, brings the scent of Chinese soil to the audience. The china with touch of contemporary language offers historical context to the modern viewer and also helps interpret Chinese elegance. And lacquer is a material deeply rooted to the eastern aesthetic; and which for artist is a challenge to rediscover its beauty in a contemporary setting. Six artists exhibit in the show, although different in materials, themes and techniques, all displays the caring of humanity and the exploring of new oriental dimension. |
