Departing from the universities, the undergraduates from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute who grew up in the contemporary background are rethinking the future of Chinese art. This exhibition brings together five artists' exploration of the contemporaneity of Chinese art, amidst the inevitability of globalization, it demonstrates how they evolve their practice by drawing inspiration from a wide array of sources to seek the contemporary perspectives and development possibilities of Chinese art, and so to solve the ‘dilemma’ of Chinese art at present with individual ‘transformation’.
The main theme of this exhibition is ‘progress’. First, regarding the works all come from artist's early practice, the creation itself is still evolving. Furthermore, the progress of Chinese Contemporary art is zigzagging forward. Under the complex background of today, how to adjust the relationship between ‘tradition and contemporary’, ‘Chinese characteristics’ and ‘globalization’ is a topic worth long-term discussion and attention.
After a span of ten years, it remains to be tested whether the ‘transformation’ in current perspective is still forward-looking, the artistic significance, however, lies in the artists’ critical spirit of subverting the classic. More notably, the artists’ bold practice has set up a platform for reflecting Chinese art and opened up a discourse in relation to contemporary art practice.
