Liu Renjie’s oil paintings, forming a language of traditional Chinese hermit spirit, are combating and overturning the global cultural pattern by means of breaking the visual habitual logic to achieve tranquil and silent atmosphere in depiction of social clamor from the opposite angle and narrative and language pattern to adapt geographical habits through changing some features in oil paintings’ language. Liu Renjie and characters in his paintings, confronted with choices of advancing and retreating in the social trend, are seeking a return of local cultural spirit through escaping from the waves of economic globalization in a quiet and peaceful manner, with the ultimate result of emerging new local culture in rebuilding the order between marginalized culture and the culture of global mainstream. Overturning the political connotation of realism through expressing traditional hermit culture with seemingly – rational realism, Liu Renjie has ascended as an avant – garde to challenge the global culture in advancing from retreating, thus ultimately turning into the carrier of Chinese traditional culture and social issues on the spiritual level.
